PUNE: Pune Cantonment Board's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Cantonment General Hospital, so far relying on the services of honorary specialists, will soon have seven full-time specialists offering services in areas like radiology , orthopaedics, paediatrics and anaesthesiology, among others.
The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), too, will chip in by sending a seven-member team of doctors from its department of medicine to the outpatient department (OPD) of the cantonment hospital.The OPD handles close to 600plus patients on a daily basis.The move will strengthen can tonment hospital's services and ensure better healthcare to people, an official said.
As of now, the hospital, a 100bedded facility, has to rely on honorary specialists who visit the facility for a limited period on designated days in a week. The authorities were looking for a solution in terms of having full-time specialists in hospital from 8.30am to 1.30pm every day .
The hospital's resident medical officer V D Gaikwad told TOI, "This development will help us to provide better medical services to cantonment residents in the days ahead. With the absence of full-time specialist doctors, we were struggling to provide medical aid to patients."
PCB's chief executive officer, D N Yadav , said, "Our endeavour is to provide better medical services at the hospital. Having specialist doctors was important. People from poor sections of the society in cantonment can now avail facilities at minimal charges."
Hospital sources said that hundreds of patients currently go without receiving medical facilities as there are no fulltime specialist doctors at the hospital. "We have received plenty of complaints from people in this regard," a source added. Another senior hospital official said, "For the first time, AFMC has stepped in by providing assistance, which is a welcome move. They will not only provide better OPD services but also bring in discipline."
Atul Gaikwad, PCB vicepresident, said "The board will complete the requisite procedure of hiring doctors on contractual basis for 11 months in the coming days."
A senior PCB official said, "The board should hire specialist doctors for two years so that it will not have to search for experts after 11 months. We have experienced that many doctors don't continue with their contract beyond one year owing to various reasons," he added.
