GST biggest tax reform of independent India. Jump in Ease of Doing Business ranking example of good governance. India’s 30-place jump on World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business index is the recognition of “stupendous work done by us”, Modi said on Saturday. Speaking at the presentation of India’s Business Reforms at Delhi’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, Modi also lashed out at opposition leaders for “questioning India’s progress”.

    Modi asserted that the ruling Congress in Himachal Pradesh has already conceded defeat, with its senior leaders "running away" from campaigning in the state, leaving Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to fend for themselves. He launched a scathing attack on the Congress over corruption, likening the party to termites, and exhorted the people to finish it off by handing over the three-fourths majority to the BJP in the November 9 Assembly election.

    India today set a Guinness world record by cooking 918 kg khichdi, a traditional multi-grain dish, at the ongoing global food event organised by the government in the national capital. A team of 50 people led by celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor and NGO Akshaya Patra supervised the night-long preparations and yoga guru Ramdev Baba put crowning 'tadka' in the dish at the World India Food event that will conclude tomorrow, reports PTI.

    Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Saturday pitched for conferring the country's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna on independent India's first army chief, Field Marshal General K M Cariappa. "The time has also come to recommend Field Marshal Cariappa for the award of Bharat Ratna. If others can get it, I see no reason why he should not, a deserving personality for the same. We will shortly address the issue on priority," he said.

    Chennai rains: Kamal Haasan hails police dept for going beyond call of duty

    Veteran film star Kamal Haasan,who is expected to soon take the political plunge, today lauded the police Department for relief work in areas inundated in heavy rains, saying "good citizens shine with or without uniform".

    "Thanks for going beyond the call of your duty. Good citizens shine with or without uniform. More similar Thamizhan's (Tamils) should report to duty", he said in a tweet today.

    The actor also shared a picture of senior police officials taking part in relief work in a waterlogged street in Chennai following the heavy rainfall seen in the last week.

    Chennai rain update

    Rains continued to lash the metropolis and neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur besides other regions of Tamil Nadu, even as the MeT department forecast more rainfall due to a low pressure area persisting in the Bay of Bengal, reports PTI.

    Commuters had a harrowing time due to delayed services of buses and trains and severe traffic snarls. Mild rainfall was recorded in some areas in the state, moderate in others and heavy in some pockets.

    Schools and colleges, closed since October 31, were shut today as well and several university exams were postponed. The state-level National Talent Search Exam scheduled for today was deferred to November 18.

    Twitter adopts 'safeguards' after Trump account shutdown

    Twitter announced on Friday it has implemented "safeguards" in the wake of the rogue shutdown of President Donald Trump's account, to ward off any repeat, reports PTI.

    After acknowledging the 11-minute shutdown of Trump's Twitter account by a departing employee, the company said, "We have implemented safeguards to prevent this from happening again."

    On the attack on Trump's favored means of communication, Twitter said, "we take this seriously and our teams are on it."

    Spain issues European arrest warrant against Catalonia leader

    A Spanish judge has issued a European arrest warrant against ousted Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, who left for Brussels after his government was sacked after declaring independence, reports France 24.

    A Madrid High Court judge asked Belgium to arrest Puigdemont and four associates after they ignored a court order to return to Spain on Thursday to answer charges of rebellion, sedition, misuse of public funds, disobedience and breach of trust relating to their secessionist campaign.

    Brussels will "study" the arrest warrant, a spokesman for the country's state prosecutor told AFP.

    "We're going to study it and then give it to a judge," Eric Van der Sijpt said.

    Heavy Showers Lash Chennai After Brief Lull; Death Toll at 8

    Respite from rain was short-lived for Chennai with showers lashing the city again on Friday evening. Schools and colleges have been shut since October 31 and rain-related incidents have claimed eight lives so far. The AIADMK government and civic agencies are under fire for not being prepared despite tall claims.
