One policeman was killed and another injured as militants opened fire and lobbed a grenade at the security forces in south Kashmir on Saturday.

A police spokesperson earlier said two policemen were injured when a patrol was fired upon in Pulwama’s Rajpora. “The incident took place at around 4:10 p.m. In the ensuing gun battle, two police personnel sustained injuries and were shifted to the hospital,” said the police.

Later, constable Abdul Salam succumbed to his injuries. In Shopian, militants lobbed a grenade at a camp of the police’s Special Operations Group (SOG) in the Imam Sahib area.

Locals clashed with security forces in Pulwama’s Samboora area on Saturday. The clash was triggered when a joint operation was being launched by the Army, CRPF and the police.

Eyewitnesses said security forces resorted to teargas shelling and aerial firing. Two soldiers and a militant were killed in a gunfight in the same village on Tuesday evening.

National Conference president and MP of Srinagar Farooq Abdullah called upon both India and Pakistan “to take effective and urgent measures to restore peace along the Line of Control (LoC)”.

“People on either side of the LoC have become the primary targets of border skirmishes and are facing the brunt of cross-border hostilities between the two nuclear-powered countries,” said Dr. Abdulah.
