NEW DELHI: Those who were not been able to deposit scrapped notes by December 31 last year and filed petitions in the Supreme Court (SC) about the issue, will not be prosecuted, the Centre told the Supreme Court (SC) on Friday.
The Centre told the SC that these petitioners will not be prosecuted for possessing old Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes that was scrapped on November 8 last year. However, it did add that they will not be prosecuted only for the amount mentioned in their petitions.
The SC then asked these petitioners to intervene in the main petition which challenges the validity of demonetisation and which is pending before a five-judge bench. It also said the eventual decision of the bench will determine whether these petitioners will be allowed to exchange their old currency notes.
SC said whether these petitioners will be allowed to exchange their old currency notes would depend on the outcome of 5-judge bench decision.
