CHENNAI: Priyanka Kalidas was gripped by two extreme emotions after winning the national U-17 chess title on Wednesday. It was her first success at the national level, which got her a berth in the World Junior Championship.

If that was a good feeling, thoughts that followed were not so good. How would she fund her trip to Tarvision in Italy, for the event to be held from November 12-26? Despite being a national champion, she doesn’t have a sponsor. Travel and other expenses will run upto over a lakh. Priyanka doesn’t have an answer.

“I will be playing in the World Junior Championship. I have no regular sponsor. I will be asking friends and well wishers for support,” said Priyanka. “So far we have managed with the help of friends and by borrowing. Even this time, we have to do that. Because of this, we are forced to let her travel alone,” said Priyanka’s mother K Maruthambal.

Hailing from Coimbatore, the 16-year-old lost her father five years ago.
