China 'mischief' behind Assam floods: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Nov 3, 2017, 13:25 IST
AGARTALA: State finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said the Assam government has sought intervention of the Centre regarding reports of Chinese involvement in blocking waters of the Brahmaputra, an act which has allegedly been triggering floods in several parts of the state over the last few months. He said there have been recent occasions when there has been a sudden rise in the water level, submerging towns in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, despite there being no rain in these areas. Though China has denied reports of diverting waters of the Brahmaputra to India, Himanta said the sudden rise in the water level can only be explained by 'mischief' by China.

"China used to share hydrological data as per the agreement signed with India in 2015 but about three months prior to Doklam they stopped sharing it, which raises suspicions of some mischief," Himanta said.

Sarma also suggested China might be conducting trials of a water bomb attack on India. "We propose that the Centre take up the issue at an international forum," he added.
