The death toll in the Unchahar NTPC plant boiler explosion has risen to 32 on Friday. Also, seven labourers critically injured in the explosion were airlifted by defence aircraft from Lucknow. They were admitted to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital.

The death toll in the explosion at NTPC's Unchahar plant climbed to 29, with nine more deaths reported on Thursday.

"Twenty-nine persons have succumbed to injuries and 85 were being treated at hospitals in Rae Bareli and Lucknow," the NTPC said in an official release.

The Uttar Pradesh police had on Thursday set-up green corridor till airport to bring three persons injured in the NTPC accident to Delhi's AIIMS via special aircraft.

The NTPC in an official release said that Unit No. 6 (500 MW) of the plant was under shutdown after the accident.

However, five other units of 1,050 MW capacity were operating normally.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the UP government over the blast.

Expressing concern, the commission in a statement said that a "high-level probe into the matter is immediately required to ascertain the negligence and errors, if any, behind the incident, which involves the right to life".

It said there was need to ensure that such tragedies do not recur. A detailed report is expected from the government within six weeks, the rights panel said.
