MediaTek announced that it is partnering up with Google for a new project called GMS Express. The project is aimed at reducing the Google's certification process (on custom Android builds) from three months to four weeks. This includes Google Mobile Service (GMS) and Google Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) certifications.

According to XDA-Developers, under this new program, MediaTek will provide smartphone makers with a pre-tested, pre-certified, build of Android. MediaTek claims that it has already worked with several of the phone manufacturers with regard to the GMS express.
Android's open source nature makes it easy to modify and run it on different hardware configurations. However, Google sets up certain mandatory requirements to avoid inconsistencies on how modified Android builds operate on different devices. Therefore all Android builds need to pass Google’s certification process before the devices can be shipped pre-installed with Google's most popular apps. With the GMS Express, this certification process will be reduced from the current three months to four weeks.
This comes months after MediaTek announced a new smartphone chip, MT6739 at the India Mobile Congress. The new chip by MediaTek features 64-bit quad-core processor, four ARM Cortex-A53 cores with max CPU frequency clocked at up to 1.5 GHz.
