Cauvery tribunal's term extended by six months

The Centre has given a six-month extension to the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT), which is looking into the dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over sharing the water of Cauvery River.

The tribunal's term, which ended on Thursday, was extended by a notification on Friday.  "...The Central government hereby further extends the period of submission of (the) further report by the said tribunal for a period up to May 2, 2018,"  the notification reads.

The CWDT was constituted on June 2, 1990, for the adjudication of the water dispute. Kerala and Puducherry are also parties to the dispute.  

On February 5, 2007, the tribunal ordered Karnataka to release 192 thousand million cubic  feet (tmcft) of water to the lower riparian Tamil Nadu every year from June to January. Both the  states have gone to the Supreme Court against the  CWDT order.
