LIMA, Nov 3 (Reuters) - Peru captain Paolo Guerrero has been provisionally suspended for 30 days by soccer's governing body FIFA after failing a drugs test, the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) announced on Friday.

The federation did not disclose the banned substance but said the striker had returned an "adverse analytical result" following the World Cup qualifying match against Argentina on Oct. 5.

If the suspension is upheld, Peru will be without their main striker for the two World Cup playoff matches against New Zealand later this month. The winner of the tie will secure a place in next year's finals in Russia.

The first game will take place in Wellington on Nov. 11 with the return leg four days later in Lima.

"The FPF respects FIFA's decision and is confident the facts will soon be clarified," the FPF said on Twitter without providing additional details about the findings of the test.

Guerrero, 33, is one of the top players in a Peru side that is hoping to qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1982. The Flamengo striker has scored 32 goal in 83 internationals.

His free kick goal against Colombia in the final qualifier in October helped the home side get the point that guaranteed them a playoff spot.

Guerrero could not immediately be reached for comment.

Flamengo said they had been informed of the findings. (Reporting By Mitra Taj, Additional Reporting By Andrew Downie in Sao Paulo; Editing by Chris Reese and Pritha Sarkar)
