PUNE: Students at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) have complained to the vice-chancellor about dim lights in the reading rooms of the Jayakar library.

The complaint was raised through a recently introduced programme at SPPU, under which the VC replies to students' queries via community radio once a month.

Apart from dim lights, the issue of lack of conveyance within the varsity was also raised. An official admitted that an internal inspection of the reading room by the estate department revealed less luminosity. The vice-chancellor now plans to replace the tubelights with LED installations.

The building has ground plus four floors, of which the fourth floor and the reading rooms on the west side of the building are always closed. "Though there are lights in all the functioning reading rooms, it is extremely dim. Readers suffer from eye strain when they are in the library for too long," a student pursuing master's degree at the university said.

Another student said, "During examinations, not enough chairs are available. Yet the authorities never open the fourth floor or the reading rooms on the western part of the building. Many of us then have to sit on the corridors where, again, light is a big issue." Students said low voltage causes the lights to dim further.

Replying to the issue of lack of conveyance, VC Nitin Karmalkar said, "I think walking should be seen as a form of exercise that is needed in this age. However, we are aware of the issue. We have procured a six-seater electric vehicle. We will also purchase a 14-seater soon."

Karmalkar spoke about the lack of public bus service after 6pm inside the campus and said he has written a letter to the local bus authorities to provide bus services at night.

He also admitted that there are places within the campus lacking proper lighting and assured to have the issue addressed at the earliest.
