Furnish parking proof for vehicle registration

Decision taken by Noida authorities as part of a drive to decongest city roads

Authorities in Noida will now allow vehicle registration only if the owner furnishes parking proof beforehand. The decision has been taken jointly by the Noida administration, the city police and the Transport Department as part of a drive to decongest city roads and crack down on illegal parking.

Gautam Budh Nagar Assistant Regional Transport Officer A.K. Pandey, however, clarified that it’s an old order and the department has only decided to implement it strictly now. “We will award fresh vehicle registration only after the owner shows us documents or proof of parking space for the vehicle. In absence of proof, no registration will be allowed,” he said.

Poor planning and a rise in number of vehicles have led to traffic chaos in the city. While the authorities have given approval to several group housing societies, leading to increase in the number of vehicles in limited space, the residents too have bought multiple vehicles, further shrinking the space.

On an average, each house or flat in Noida has two to three vehicles, the Transport Department said, adding that most of these vehicles are parked on roads, leading to traffic snarls.

“There are families owning three to four cars. We have also come across cases where people do not sell or dispose of their old vehicles due to emotional attachment. We have urged them to dispose of vehicles which are of no use,” Mr. Pandey said.

Recently, City Magistrate Mahindra Singh sent notices to four big establishments in Gautam Budh Nagar — Logix Mall in Sector 32, Amity University in Sector 125, U-Flex Company in Sector 60 and Accenture & MetLife offices in Sector 135 — for illegal parking outside their premises.

The notice asked them to stop vehicles coming to their premises from parking illegally on the road by October 30, failing which they will have to appear in the city court and give an explanation as to why their permits and licences should not be cancelled.

The notices were sent after the traffic police wrote to the district administration urging it to act against establishments that are creating traffic problems for residents. After analysing the traffic and parking issues, the District Magistrate asked the City Magistrate to start sending notices to errant establishments.

The City Magistrate then asked the traffic police and the local police station to prepare a list of educational institutions, malls and other organisations that are illegally parking in public spaces despite having their own parking areas.
