An exhibition of photographs on snakes, organised by the Government Museum to raise awareness among students and the general public about the reptiles, opened in the city on Wednesday.
The exhibition was inaugurated by P. Vijayakumar, founder-president of Notaphilly Society.
Featuring mostly photos of Indian snakes, it showcases 40 images drawn from online sources at the central hall of the museum complex at Rani Mangammal Mahal at Town Hall.
“We want to dispel the myths about these animals, and show the great variety that exists within the species,” said museum curator in-charge A. Periasamy.
“We have differentiated the poisonous and non-poisonous types, so that the public can understand that not all snakes are dangerous to human beings.”
The exhibition marks the first of what will be a monthly rota of themed public awareness programmes at the museum, said Mr. Periasamy.
Barring the museum’s weekly off on Friday, the exhibition will be open from 9.30 a.m to 5 p.m. every day until November 5.
