Aurangabad: The crime branch of the city police has arrested a 35-year-old rickshaw driver for allegedly threatening a businessman and demanding extortion money from him. The driver has claimed that two more suspects are involved in the case but they are yet to identified, police said.
Chand Ahmed Shaikh, a resident of Ambika Nagar in Mukundwadi, was produced in a court on Thursday and remanded in five days of police custody.
Shaikh, who is a rickshaw driver, was charged with section 385 (Putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) of IPC and arrested late on Wednesday, police said.
According to the complaint lodged by Rahul Pukhraj Pagariya (42) of N-3 in Cidco, an unidentified man arrived at his automobile showroom and handed over an envelope to the watchman. The envelope contained a letter in Hindi and addressed to the businessman.
"The letter said Pagariya should pay Rs 7 lakh. He was also threatened that if he failed to pay the cash, one of his family members would be eliminated," police said.
Pagariya approached police commissioner Yashasvi Yadav, who handed over the case to the crime branch for investigation.
Yadav said, "Considering the gravity of the issue, we collected footage of several CCTV cameras and managed to nab the rickshaw driver had who handed over the envelope containing the letter demanding extortion to the watchman."
Sources said that the crime branch is trying its best to identify and nab the other two suspects who, the rickshaw claimed, had handed over the letter to him to be delivered to the watchman.
Inspector Shivaji Kamble of the crime branch said, "So far the rickshaw driver has not revealed anything about the main suspect who gave him the envelope to be handed over to the watchman."
The officer said that the names being taken by the arrested suspect are being cross-checked. "We are also checking if someone simply used the rickshaw driver as a courier to convey the message to the businessman," he said.
