Pune: Senior railway officials said a system would be in place soon to ensure that train passengers could directly avail Metro services without having to step out of railway station.

While the under-construction foot overbridge (FOB) at Pune railway station will be connected to Pune Metro, a skywalk will connect Shivaji Nagar station with Metro station, railways authorities have said. "Though exact details in connection with the plan are still to be worked out, the idea is to ensure that passengers can easily switch over to both modes of transportation without any hassle. It has been proposed that the 12-meter-wide FOB, which is currently under construction, will be connected to the proposed Metro service at Pune station," Pune division DRM Milind Deouskar said on Thursday.

"As far as the Shivaji Nagar station is concerned, it comes under the station re-development plan. The Indian Railway Station Development Corporation is expected to sign an MoU with Metro authorities for integration of the station with the Metro," the official added.

Senior railway officials said that they were in talks with MahaMetro authorities regarding Pune station-Metro integration. "We are thinking about a plan under which the widest of the three FOBs will be extended and connected to the Metro station. Work on our FOB should be completed by the first half of next year. The MahaMetro authorities sent a proposal that is being studied," another senior official told TOI.

"A Metro station will come up along RBM Road near Pune rail division office. We are thinking of a plan under which the same FOB, which will be the widest among all the other three FOBs at the station, can be extended and connected to the Metro," another senior official told TOI. The first phase or Line-1 of the Pune Metro project, which will connect Swargate to Pimpri, is expected to be ready by 2021. The Line-1 includes a connection with Shivaji Nagar. As per PMC website, Line-2 of the project will connect Vanaz to Ramwadi and includes the Pune station.
