SILCHAR: The education department has asked the authorities of the 153-year-old Government Boys' Higher Secondary School in Silchar, which has only one toilet for its 900 students, to build at least two toilets immediately.
After a report was published in TOI about the failure of PM Modi's much-hyped Swachh Bharat Mission in this school, adviser to the department of education (Assam), Mihir Kanti Chaudhury, visited the school on Monday and spoke to the principal and members of school management and development committee, alumni association, inspector of schools, additional deputy commissioner (Cachar) and other stakeholders about the poor sanitary conditions prevailing at the institute.
"I was surprised to know that there's only one toilet for 900 students in the school. What were the school authorities, SMDC and members of the alumni association doing over the years?" Chaudhury, also the former vice-chancellor of Tezpur University, said.
The adviser to the state education department asked ADC (Cachar) Ranabir Dam to make arrangements to construct at least two toilets immediately.
Parveen Sultana Laskar, the principal in charge, had earlier told TOI that, time and again, they had appealed to authorities to construct more toilets in the school but no action was taken. There are mandatory provisions for separate toilets for both boys and girls in government schools under the Swachh Vidyalaya programme.
