DIBRUGARH: Leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia and fellow legislator Rupjyoti Kurmi met the incarcerated leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), Akhil Gogoi, at the Dibrugarh Central Jail on Wednesday.

The two Congress legislators arrived at the jail premises at 11.30am to meet the 41-year-old leader and RTI activist after obtaining prior permission from the jail authorities. The meeting, which went on for around 60 minutes, was termed as a 'courtesy visit' by Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi who also accused the BJP-led government of following a vindictive policy against anyone who dares to raise voice against the government.

"We wanted to express our solidarity with Akhil who has been a victim of the BJP government's vengeful attitude. Akhil has always raised his voice against important issues like big dams, Hindu migrants and Nagalim. The present government is trying to throttle the voice of democracy. He used to severely criticize Tarun Gogoi when he was the chief minister, but our government never tried to suppress his voice," Kurmi said after meeting the KMSS leader.

Saikia, who represents the Amguri assembly seat and son of former CM Hiteswar Saikia, said that the BJP talks about jati, mati, bheti, but when Akhil raised his voice on major issues like mega dam, land patta for landless, Hindu Bangladeshis and Nagalim, the government painted him as traitor and book him under NSA.

Akhil ,who is facing sedition and other charges, has been in Dibrugarh jail since September 14 after he was arrested on charge of delivering a provocative speech at a public rally in the Bamunbari area of Moran on September 12 last where he is said to have urged people to take up AK-47 rifles in their movement against the government.
