PANAJI: Following a directive from the high court of Bombay at Goa, Merces panchayat on Wednesday cleared some quantity of debris and waste which was dumped along the Panaji-Old Goa bypass road.
On Tuesday, a division bench, headed by Justice N M Jamdar, had issued a direction on a contempt petition filed by advocate Aires Rodrigues. According to Rodrigues, a directive of the high court in 2008 regarding the garbage issue, was not complied with by the government.
When the matter came up for hearing, advocate Ashwin Bhobe, appearing on behalf of Merces panchayat, told the court that the debris was removed by engaging 15-20 trucks since Tuesday. The petitioner told the court that the debris was still lying at the site.
Bhobe also told the court that the problem arose because there is no designated area where the garbage could be taken to. The petitioner, as well as counsel for the parties, however, accepted that the issue of garbage disposal is pressing and urgent in Goa, needs to be taken up on a priority basis and efforts of all the concerned parties need to be co-ordinated.
The court then asked the advocate general to inform it on the methodology for waste management already adopted, what are the shortfalls in the methodology and whether any improvement is needed. Government has been directed to place on record a compilation of all rules and copies of the various orders passed in these matters.
