A low pressure area formed over Sri Lanka and the south west Bay of Bengal will bring moderate rain over most places in southern Tamil Nadu and a few places in the northern coastal districts, S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre in Chennai, said on Thursday.
Wednesday’s upper air circulation over Sri Lanka and the south west Bay of Bengal intensified into the low pressure area on Thursday. Fishermen venturing into the sea have been advised to be cautious. Due to the influence of the low pressure area, Chennai is likely to get intermittent rain, which can be heavy at times till Saturday, he told reporters.
But even after Saturday, coastal Tamil Nadu will experience rain or thundershowers at many places since monsoon rain has been predicted till November 6 by the Regional Metreorological Centre in Chennai. Moderate rainfall has been predicted for all the coastal districts. Towards Sunday and Monday, the rainfall activity may slightly reduce.
Former Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Y. E. A. Raj said the low pressure is a very feeble one and will hang around unlike a cyclonic storm that will move in any direction and may not bring as much rain. “Such a feeble system that does not have a clear centre is a very handy one to bring rainfall during the monsoon,” he said.
In the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, Palayamkottai recorded the highest amount of rainfall by receiving 13 cm of rain. This was followed by Tiruchendur (9 cm); Kelambakkam (8 cm); Mamallapuram (5 cm); and the DGP’s office, Poonamallee, Sathyabhama University and Nungambakkam (4 cm).
