Shares of NTPC lost over 2 percent intraday on Thursday as investors turned cautious following a boiler blast at one of its plant that killed 20 people.

A massive explosion ripped a boiler in the state-run power giant NTPC's Unchahar plant in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli district on Wednesday, killing at least twenty persons while scores suffered severe burn injuries, officials said.

In a statement, the NTPC had said that at around 1530 hrs at unit number six of its Unchahar plant, there was a sudden abnormal sound at 20 meters elevation.

There was an opening in corner number two from which hot flue gases and steam escaped affecting the people working around the area, the central public sector undertaking said.

It added that around 80 people were rushed to NTPC hospital, most of them were discharged after giving first-aid.

The stock fell over 2 percent in the past three days. At 10:20 hrs, NTPC was quoting at Rs 179.50, down Rs 0.65, or 0.36 percent, on the BSE. It has touched an intraday high of Rs 179.80 and an intraday low of Rs 176.50.
