GUWAHATI: Assam government will carry out a massive publicity blitzkrieg to allay fear pertaining to the ongoing updation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) 1951.

On Thursday Registrar General & Census Commissioner of India Sailesh and MHA joint secretary (Northeast) Satyendra Garg held meeting with different stakeholders including students union, political parties on NRC.

There is fear among a section of people that NRC process will exclude their name. Draft NRC will be published next month.

A senior official told ET, “All the stakeholder were unanimous that NRC must be error free. There were concerns expressed by some on classification of people as “original inhabitant”. However the RGI has clarified this classification will not be reflected in the NRC.”

Gauhati High court has earlier order ruled Panchayat certificate do not have legal validity. Several persons have submitted this certificate to support their claim to citizenship.

He added, “Some organisations expressed concern on Panchayat certificate not being accepted as document. However this matter is sub judice and next hearing of Supreme Court is on November 15, the matter will be discuused in the court.”

He said, “RGI has assured the stakeholder the NRC database will not be allowed for any other purpose. There will be mechanism to appeal and things can be rectified in case of omission. We will take to massive campaign to clear misgivings on NRC process.”

Assam has taken to NRC updation to weed out illegal Bangladeshi immigrants from the state.

Assam Director General of Police, Mukesh Sahay assured, " police is monitoring social media posts and security of NRC seva Kendras (assistance Centre) are being reviewed. Full proof security will be provided to these Kendras.”

Sahay said, “Police will counter the misinformation campaign pertaining to NRC. Genuine Indian citizen have nothing to worry about.”

The DGP said, “Details of security requirement are being worked out and we will approach Centre for support. Recently we had a meeting of Unified command and all security forces were sensitize about the NRC issue. Intelligence gathering is working and we will ensure that there will be fixed security pickets and quick response team is deployed. We have categorise sensitive areas and accordingly measures will be taken.”
