Pune: Unidentified persons stole Rs 39.59 lakh after cutting open two cash dispensers of a private bank's ATM kiosk at Mahalunge in Khed taluka, nearly 35km from here, with gas cutters early on Thursday.
The suspects also tried to steal cash from another private bank's cash dispenser located a few metre away. Manohar Desai (34), an official from the ATM cash management company, lodged a complaint with the Chakan police.
Assistant inspector Shridhar Jagtap said the ATM kiosk of the private bank is located at shop no 3 of Walke complex in the Palakhi chowk area of Mahalunge on Talegaon-Chakan Road. On Thursday morning, an owner of a shop adjacent to the kiosk noticed the broken machines and alerted the police.
"Our team found that both the cash dispensers were broken, The dispensers and the wall inside the kiosk were blackened by the flames of the gas cutter," Jagtap said.
ATM cash management company told the Chakan police that Rs 31.16 lakh was stolen from one machine and Rs 8.42 lakh from another. Jagtap said the police have obtained CCTV footage from the kiosk. He added, "The camera captured images of only one person. His face was covered."
The police later received a complaint about an theft attempt at another cash dispenser dispenser of a private bank near the Walke complex. "They, however, could not steal any cash," Jagtap said, adding that both the kiosks were unguarded.
