Nagpur: The 50-year-old Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH) will soon get its first MRI machine. Its 20-year-old CAT scan machine, which has been operating off and on, will also be replaced with the latest version. Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) too will getting 30 high-end ventilators, which will play a big role in treating as well as sustaining brain-dead patients who may be potential organ donors. These machines will be funded using the Rs46 crore allotted by the state government to upgrade both colleges.
The GR dated November 1 gives IGMCH a grant of Rs25 crore under the Post-Graduation (PG) upgradation programme. Another GR issued on Thursday gives GMCH a grant of Rs21.75 crore under the Chief Minister (CM) special funds.
Until now, IGMCH never had a MRI machine. The patients at the hospital requiring this test were being referred to GMCH. At the same time, IGMCH's CAT scan and angiography machines, which are 10 to 20 years old, had been running on and off. There have been situations when the CAT scan was non-operational for over three months, with the entire patient load being diverted to GMCH.
As per the GR, IGMCH is being given three equipments — 1.5 Tesla MRI Machine with Turn Key costing Rs12 crore, 128-slice CAT scan machine costing Rs7 crore, and digital subtraction angiography machine costing Rs6 crore.
"The GR comes as a huge relief since the hospital is in dire need of all the three machines," said IGMCH acting dean Dr Anuradha Shrikhande.
A doctor from GMCH said, "At GMCH Intensive Care Unit (ICU), seven ventilators are in working condition. There is one transport ventilator used in case a patient is being transferred to SSH. At the same time, efforts are being made to convert existing beds at SSH and increase some Mini ICUs. Shortage of ventilators was a hurdle for this."
In a major boost to GMCH as well as SSH, they are together being given 30 high-end ventilators costing Rs15 lakh each.
Since swine flu has been existent throughout the year, many Type-3 patients have lost their life due to unavailability of high-end frequency oscillation ventilators (HFOV). None of these ventilators were available in the city until last month, when a private hospital introduced one.
