Margao: Baburao Mirashi, arrested by the Margao town police on Wednesday for stealing a mobile phone, escaped on Thursday.
After being produced before the Margao JMFC, Mirashi was in the process of being transported to the Colvale jail. He was waiting with a police escort at the lobby of the South Goa police headquarters, Margao, to get into the vehicle. As the cop escorting him rushed inside to get some documents, Mirashi took to his heels.
Late Thursday, South Goa SP Arvind Gawas placed Vishal Desai, the constable escorting Mirashi, under suspension, pending inquiry.
A search for the accused has been launched.
