Amit Shah lauds PM for jump in ease of doing business ranking

NEW DELHI: The sharp improvement in India's `Ease of Doing Business' rankings came as a welcome boost for BJP ahead of polls in Gujarat, a state with a strong business orientation, with party chief Amit Shah congratulating PM Narendra Modi for the achievement.

The rankings can help BJP argue that its policies will help business grow and sections of the trading community affected by GST implementation should take the long-term picture rather than go by immediate problems. The party has already sought to assure businesses that it will take steps to ensure that switch to GST does not ruin their trade.

Shah further added that the results demonstrate PM Modi's "laser focus" on improving lives of the country's citizens and implementation of various reforms. The PM has also in recent rallies and public speeches stressed that there is no going back on reforms that will make the economy cleaner and deliver benefits to the poor and middle classes besides improving business environment.

Shah stressed that better business environment is leading to "better business opportunities for our entrepreneurs, particularly small and medium enterprises".The latter reference is significant as smaller businesses are seen to be struggling due to the change-over to computerisation and elimination of the "kaccha" accounts that led to largescale tax avoidance.

In a statement, the party said, "It is important to note that India's rank in the Ease of Doing Business rankings were stagnant around 130 for many years and it reached 142 in the last year of UPA rule. Such a quick and huge turnaround clearly shows the impact of good governance coupled with impeccable implementation of reforms."
