ONGOLE: A 14-year old boy studying class IX and staying in BC Welfare Hostel at Kothapatnam in Prakasam district was found dead on Tuesday morning. The boy D Karthik did not wake up along with other hostel inmates in the morning. When others tried to wake him up, there was no movement. They alerted hostel warden A Prasad Reddy, who after failing to wake him up, called a local doctor. After examining the boy, the doctor declared him dead.

Following it, the hostel warden lodged a complaint with the Kothapatnam police and also alerted mother and relatives of Karthik. The boy, who hails from Divivaripalem in Kandukur mandal, some 60 km from Kothapatnam, has been staying in BC hostel since class VI.The boy’s father D Malyadri died eight years ago and his mother Venkateswaramma is a daily wage labourer. The boy has a sister studying class VII in Kandukur Girls School. When boy’s mother was informed of his death, she along with her relatives rushed to the hostel.

The hostel warden explained that Karthik along with other inmates went to bed after dinner at 7 pm. He went for toilet in middle of the night and in the morning he did not get up. The boy was reported to be dull for the past three days and did not participate in any sports. Though Venkateswaramma and other relatives asked the police to treat it as a natural death and hand over the body, police said they will hand over it after post-mortem. The body was sent to RIMS Ongole. Police, who registered the case as suspicious death, said there were no external injuries on the body and the reason for the death could only be known after post-mortem report.
