GURUGRAM: The MCG sealed 40 meat shops and has recommended FIRs against five meat shop owners after conducting raids across the city. The raids were carried out raids in Basai, Pataudi, Wazirabad, Kanhai, Sector 43, Jharsa Badshahpur and Harijan colony among other areas where unlicensed meat sellers were operating.
Ashish Singhla, medical officer, MCG, said that the civic body regularly carries out these raids to keep a check on meat sellers though its frequency has increased recently. "In the last 15 days we have raided over 40 meat shops," Singhla said. While several shop owners were let off after a warning, others were asked to shut down their shops.
However, MCG plans to conduct an inspection again to check if the defaulters have returned to business or not. "The five sellers against whom the FIR has been recommended were repeat offenders and had been operating despite multiple warnings, Singhla said.
"The 40 meat shops that were asked to shut down were also found to be selling meat in unhygienic conditions, were not declaring the source of meat, and in some instances, the sellers were caught slaughtering and selling live birds," an MCG official said.
MCG officials who carried out the raids said that most of the shops which have been raided have not even applied for licences for procuring and selling meat in the city. Of the 40 meat shops, around 25 were operating without licence, while 15 others were street shops selling meat on footpaths and market areas.
MCG had tightened the noose around unauthorised meat seller in May, when it had implemented the conditions under the law and had mandated sellers to procure licences to sell meat in the city.
Gurgaon did not have a single licensed meat seller till May when the meat-selling rules were revised. Only 85 licences have been issued by the MCG and over 280 applications are still pending.
The municipal laws mandate that no meat shops can operate from a residential area, near a temple or educational institution forcing several meat shops in the city to shut since May.
