Helmet-less students held in Dhanbad

DHANBAD: District transport officer (DTO) Pankaj Kumar Shaw on Tuesday detained more than 100 students for riding motorbikes without helmets and licenses. The students were released only after their parents signed a bond that they will not allow their children to ride two-wheelers to school.

Various teams were deployed at important points near schools such as Carmel, De-Nobli and Delhi Public School, among others, as part of the crackdown. Shaw told TOI that the crackdown came after the department took note of a few students creating traffic menace.

"Violating traffic rules has become a common practice among these students. This is why we decided to hold a special drive to keep a check on them," he said.

School managements have been instructed to not allow students to bring bikes to school. "The school administration needs to act responsibly. They have not issued strict instructions to students regarding non-usage of bikes. Since it was the first day, we did not impose any fine and released all the students and vehicles with a strict warning to the parents," Shaw said.

The DTO added, "The drive will continue from Wednesday. If any student is found violating rules, he will be penalised."

However, the management in schools said strict instructions were issued to the students. A few students managed to dodge the administration. DAV Public School director K C Srivastava told TOI that instructions have been issued not only to students but also to their parents. "The responsibility lies with the parents and the transport department should punish such students," Srivastava said.
