The government conveniently did not appeal against the National Green Tribunal’s order banning protests at Jantar Mantar, because it suits them, CPI leader D. Raja said on Tuesday.
“It suits the government. They do not want people to raise their voice against it. The government should have appealed against the ruling,” he said.
“There is a need to evolve a political consensus against the tribunal order banning protests at Jantar Mantar and will also explore legal options,” he said. “The space to dissent is shrinking. We will speak to other parties on the issue and explore legal options too,” he added.
“They are suppressing dissent against it everywhere in the country. It is a political drama being played by the NDA government,” he added.
From November 1, there are a series of protests planned by the Left-leaning unions. From November 1-5, Kisan Mahadharna has been planned at Jantar Mantar. It remains to be seen whether the police will allow the protests. Opposition parties will hold protests on November 8, which marks the first anniversary of demonetisation.
