GUWAHATI: Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal celebrated his birthday on Tuesday by marking the state government's milestone of giving home loans totalling Rs 1000 crore to 10,000 state government employees at low interest rates under the 'Apon Ghar' scheme.
Under the scheme, male employees can avial loans upto Rs 15 lakh without any mortage at 5.5% interest rate. Female staffers can avail the facility at 5% interest rate. The remaining 3% to 3.5% will be borne by the state government.
Reiterating his government's commitment to fulfil the fundamental requirements of food, clothing and shelter to every citizen for a dignified life, Sonowal said the state government has taken up the 'Apon Ghar' home loan scheme in partnership with the State Bank of India to ensure that all permanent government employees build their own house.
Reminding the employees their responsibilities, the chief minister said, "All state government employees must work with integrity and dedication. You must improve your skills to suit the requirements of modern day work culture and stay motivated by a sense of social responsibility while discharging your duties."
He added that the state government's fight against corruption will continue to ensure good governance and make the administration more accountable and transparent. "Earlier, people failed to get proper benefits of government schemes due to weak administrative mechanism. We have given more importance to provide justice and dignified life to every citizen," he said.
Recalling the contributions of Sardar Ballav Bhai Patel to strengthen unity in the nation, he urged people to join hands to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to make 'ek bharat, shreshtha bharat' successful. He also told them to boost the state government's efforts to strengthen social and cultural unity among different communities of the state.
Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said government employees play an important role in the implementation of various schemes. He added that the state government also gives due importance to their contribution and has taken up different schemes for their benefit. The minister said the government has made an expenditure of Rs 6000 crore for implementing the 7th Pay Commission recommendations and to release the arrears.
He added that permanent state government employees can now avail the benefits of 'Apon Ghar' scheme after completing one year of service. He said the state government would take up schemes for the unemployed in collaboration with the SBI.
