Thumping win for Aasu in Cotton student union polls

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union (Aasu) registered a thumping victory in the first ever Cotton University Students' Union (CUSU) election by winning 12 out of 18 posts. The results were declared late on Monday.

Even as Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India (NSUI) won the coveted president's post and Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS), the students' wing of peasant organization Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) secured five posts, it was Aasu which reigned supreme on the campus. It had also swept the student union polls at Gauhati University (GU) and Dibrugarh University (DU) this year.

NSUI's Mriganka Ray and Porisree Bora of the SMSS were elected as president and vice-president of the first students' union, while Monu Mohan Chutia of Aasu won the post of CUSU general secretary. The victory of Aasu-backed candidates in the majority of the posts is seen as crucial at a time when student wings of leading political parties are finding it difficult to check the winning streak of the all-powerful student organization. "We are grateful to the students' community for reposing their faith in Aasu. This victory reflects that students of Assam as well as Cotton University don't want to give any chance to political parties to spread their tentacles in educational institutions. They don't want to be dictated by political parties," said Raifuddin Ahmed, general secretary of All Guwahati Students' Union.

Significantly, Sangh-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) abstained from contesting the CUSU polls citing poor organizational base at the university. The election was the first student union election of CU, which was established this year after the amalgamation of the over-a-century-old Cotton College with the Cotton College State University. As the university hostels played a crucial role in the election, insiders in CU said upgrading infrastructure in the new university will be the prime tasks of the union.
