GHAZIABAD: The preparations for urban local body elections in the district were reviewed by officials of the district administration on Tuesday ahead of the nomination filing process. Candidates will begin filing their nominations for different wards of Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation and eight other urban local bodies in the district from Wednesday till November 8.

The polls will be held for all urban local bodies in the district on November 26. More than 2.28 lakh voters have been added to the electoral rolls compiled by UP State Election Commission in the 100 wards of Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation as compared to the total number of voters in the polls that were held in 2012.

The number of wards in the municipal corporation has increased to 100 for the polls of 2017 from 80 in 2012.

"The final list of voters was published on October 18. Objections regarding voters' lists in all urban local bodies in the district are being received by the administration. A supplementary list of voters will be published on November 6 after examining the objections. Two separate centers have been set up for filing of nominations for different local bodies. Voting will be conducted through EVMs only for Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation. Eight teams have been formed to ensure that there are no violations of the model code of conduct," said district magistrate Ritu Maheshwari.

The polling will be conducted through secret ballot in the remaining eight urban local bodies.

The post of mayor of the municipal corporation was reserved for candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) in the urban local body elections in 2012. In 2017, the post has been reserved for woman candidates belonging to any class.

The model code of conduct came into force in the district after polls were notified by UP State Election Commission on October 20.

Meanwhile, directions have been issued to all police stations to ensure firearms belonging to licensed weapon holders are deposited ahead of the polls on November 26. On Tuesday, SSP Hari Narayan Singh said that so far only around 600 firearms have been deposited even though there are a total number of over 12,000 licenced weapons holders in the district.
