GURUGRAM: With time running out, BJP was forced to announce on Tuesday that the MCG mayor's name will be announced on November 3. However, it's still unclear who will become the city's next mayor, with the two factions, led by Gurgaon MP Rao Inderjit and state cabinet minister Rao Narbir, still adamant their candidate should get the post.

The post of mayor is reserved for a woman from the schedule caste category for this term. While the MP wants ward 7 councillor Madhu Azad as the mayor, Narbir is pushing for ward 10 councillor Sheetal Bagri. Azad has an edge as she won her seat on the party symbol.

Bagri, despite being a SC candidate, may lose out as she did not secure a party ticket and contested as an Independent.

The MCG elections were held on September 24, with results declared the same evening. The official notification of the result, in which the ruling BJP managed only 14 seats, was issued on October 3. According to the rulebook, the mayor, her senior deputy and his deputy have to be chosen within a month of the notification.

"A meeting will be held on Friday in John Hall to elect the next mayor, as well as the senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor. I've already issued a notice in this regard," said Gurgaon divisional commissioner D Suresh.

But with no thaw in sight, the party leadership has assigned Faridabad MP Krishan Pal Gurjar and Haryana cabinet minister O P Dhankar the duty of talking to the warring factions, to reach a consensus and avoid a vote. Sources claimed Gurjar and Dhankar have already started backroom talks with the factions and are hopeful of pushing through Azad as the consensus candidate.

The two leaders are also likely to meet all 26 BJP councillors on Wednesday. According to party sources, while an election might not be held for the mayoral post, it is likely to be held to decide who becomes her senior deputy and deputy.

"The party is working hard to convince both Rao Inderjit and Rao Narbir, and has succeeded to some extent. Since Madhu Azad has won on the party symbol and meets the criteria set for the post, it's almost certain she will become the next mayor. Rao Narbir is reconciled to this fact.

"However, there is going to be a fierce contest for the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor," said a senior leader.

The MP's camp wants ward 33 councillor Sunita Yadav as senior deputy mayor, while Rao Narbir wants ward 26 councillor Parveen Lata or ward 29 councillor Kuldeep Yadav for the post, as a result of which a vote might become necessary.
