The Delhi government wants all cycle rickshaws in Delhi to be replaced with "environment friendly, two-seater e-rickshaws".

A Delhi government committee, formed in January after a High Court direction, has also said the number of four-seater e-rickshaws must be capped, and that the registration of such vehicles be done only after the owner gets a permanent driving licence.

"Currently, there is no limit on the number of e-rickshaws that can be registered in Delhi. The committee opines, considering the road space and availability of other modes of transport, the number of e-rickshaw should be limited as in case of autorickshaws," said the report, adding that there are close to 1 lakh such vehicles without registration.

E-rickshaws approved by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways have a maximum width of 1 metre and length of 2.8 metres, and are permitted to carry four passengers. The panel has recommended designing smaller e-rickshaws with a passenger capacity of two.
