PUNE: Speeding on the Mutha riverside road in the Deccan area cost a life in the wee hours of Sunday.
Mohan Umala Meghawat (30) of Pashan, riding pillion on a scooter, lost his life. Nilesh Chandu Khetawat (39), also of Pashan, was riding the two-wheeler. He suffered serious injuries in the accident.
The duo was returning home on a scooter from the old parts of the city around 2am on Sunday when the accident occurred. Khetawat, according to the Deccan police, was driving the scooter at a very high speed since there was no vehicular movement on the riverside road.
The two-wheeler was flung into the air after it tried to negotiate a speed-breaker at high speed. The pillion rider, too, was flung in the air and it is suspected that he landed on his head, the police said. Khetawat and the scooter fell on the road.
A night patrolling team of the Deccan police took the injured persons to a private hospital for treatment but doctors pronounced Mohan dead.
The duo were casual labourers, the police said, adding that Khetawat was booked for rash and negligent driving.
In another accident, a nine-year-old Rajvir Mangesh Bhosale of Shindewadi in Ambegaon taluka was killed in a hit-and-run case at Mahavir Chowk in Chinchwad on Monday afternoon.
The Pimpri police has booked the unidentified tempo driver for rash and negligent driving.
According to the police, the family stays in a small house in the chowk. The boy had gone out to fetch water for cooking, when the tempo knocked him down.
