Watch: Miss Peru 2018 contestants list crime rates against women on stage instead of measurements
Beauty pageants are not everyone's cup of tea. A bunch of gorgeous women, all above 5'5, waving, smiling and twirling in heels might seem a little too contrived to some people, but Miss Peru 2018 is changing all of that. The participants of Miss World in the South American country announced some disturbing facts and figures about the state of women in their country as their body measurements.
Not only was the outcome intense, it was also a reminder that platforms like these can be used to make the community aware.
The first contestant, Camila Canicoba Llaro says, "My name is Camila Canicoba and I represent the department of Lima. My measurements are: 2,202 cases of femicide reported in the last nine years in my country."

Melina Machuca Roncal says, "My name is Melina Machuca, I represent the department of Cajamarca, and my measurements are: more than 80% of women in my city suffer from violence."

Another contestant says, “My name is Luciana Fernández and I represent the city of Huánuco, and my measurements are: 13,000 girls suffer sexual abuse in our country.”

“Almendra Marroquín here. I represent Cañete, and my measurements are: more than 25% of girls and teenagers are abused in their schools.”

Although the twirls and the glitter remain, the conviction behind their words prove that activism and beauty can co-exist. That one can choose to wear that lipstick and still discourse issues which demand our attention.
