LUCKNOW: At least nine people are feared dead and close to a 100 injured following a blast in a boiler pipe at NTPC's Unchahar power plant in UP's Raebareli on Wednesday.
According to reports, hundreds of labourers were working at unit number 6 of the 500MW power unit when the boiler pipe exploded. Many labourers are still feared trapped around the blast site.
The unit was being newly installed by the NTPC.
In a statement, the NTPC said that around 3.30 pm, a sudden, abnormal sound was reported in the boiler, after which hot flue gases and steam escaped. The NTPC said that around 80 people were affected in the incident, of which eight succumbed to their injuries. "Around 10 persons with serious injuries have been referred to nearby hospitals and to Lucknow,'' the NTPC said.
UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who is in Mauritius for an investment summit, announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the workers who died in the accident.
He has also directed officials of the home department to rush to the site. Sources in the state government said that principal secretary home, Arvind Kumar, along with senior officials of the police department have already rushed to the site.
The medical department has been directed to send as many ambulances as possible to the spot. Lucknow-based King George's Medical University has also been put on alert.
