Pune: Entry of heavy vehicles has been restricted on some roads of Pune-Ahmednagar, Magarpatta-Kharadi and Hadapsar areas to address traffic and commuters' safety issues.
"Heavy vehicles like trucks and goods carriers will not be allowed to ply on certain roads in these areas from 9am to 11am in the morning and from 5pm to 9pm in the evening. Depending on the effective of these restrictions, we will decide if more curbs of this nature are required in these areas," an official from the Pune traffic police said.
The move comes as a huge relief to the residents of these areas who had been demanding measures to address issues of road safety and traffic here. "Presence of heavy vehicles in these areas had caused numerous fatal accidents here, throwing traffic out of gear," they said.
Recently, agitations were also held by the residents of Ahmednagar Road to press for their demand to ban heavy vehicles during rush hours. Following these agitations, corporators from Hadapsar and Ahmednagar Road areas had written a letter to the civic commissioner urging the latter to look into the issue.
Ajay Darwatkar from Chandannagar said daily commuters, especially two-wheeler riders, have a harrowing time travelling from Yerawada to Kharadi. There was a need to put some restrictions on heavy vehicles to streamline the traffic here. Drivers of heavy vehicles like dumpers and sand trucks have been found indulging in rash driving, putting the lives of other travellers at risk."
Officials at the Ahmednagar Road branch of traffic police said they have restricted entry of heavy vehicles from Kharadi up to Shastrinagar chowk during the rush hours.
A similar ban has also been imposed on Magarpatta-Kharadi road (bypass) during evening hours. "Heavy vehicles have been directed to stop at Hadapsar and Saswad road during rush hours," a senior official attached to the Hadapsar branch of traffic police said.
