2 killed in wild elephant attacks in 2 days

Coimbatore: Two elderly persons were killed in wild elephant attacks in as many incidents reported from Karamadai and Anaimalai on the outskirts of the city in the past two days.

The deceased were identified as M Masaniammal, 80, of Alangudi tribal settlement near Tholampalayam village, and C Velusamy, 72, of Sethumadai near Anaimalai.

According to police, Masaniammal was attacked by a wild elephant while she was collecting firewood inside the reserve forest area on Tuesday evening. "She succumbed to the injuries on the spot," they said.

Other people in the reserve forest area spotted her body and alerted the forest department field staff, who rushed to the spot and sent the body to the government hospital in Mettupalayam for postmortem. The Karamadai police have registered a case.


In another incident, Velusamy was trampled to death by a wild elephant in a farmland at Sethumadai near Anaimalai on Monday night. Velusamy, the police said, had taken the agricultural land on lease from one Prabhu of the same locality and been engaged in farming for more than 25 years.


"He resided in a small house in the farmland. On Monday night, he was sitting outside the house when the wild elephant entered the agricultural field and trampled him to death," the police said.


The family members of the deceased alerted the forest department field staff, who sent the body to the government hospital in Vettaikaranpudur for postmortem. The Anaimalai police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
