PUNE: The Airport police on Monday registered an offence of negligence against a labour contractor for the death of 36-year-old worker after he fell from the seventh floor of an under-construction building on Porwal Road in Lohegaon.
Tapas Nepal Mujumdar from West Bengal, who was currently residing at a labour camp of the building construction company, died due to multiple injuries. He was engaged in a centering job on the seventh floor of the under-construction housing project at the time of the incident.
He lost his balance and fell on a safety net, which could not sustain his weight and snapped, leading to his fall.
Sub-inspector Deepak Jadhav of the Airport police on Tuesday said, "Mujumdar was wearing a protective gear and safety belt while doing the centering work. He, however, lost his balance and fell off from the seventh floor around 8.30am on October 25. The impact of the incident was such that the belt broke and Mujumdar fell on the safety net, which could not sustain his weight. The net tore and the worker fell on the ground and sustained serious injuries. The labourers present at the site rushed him to a nearby private hospital, where he succumbed to multiple injuries."
Jadhav said, "After registering a complaint of accidental death under section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code, we immediately launched an investigation into the incident. During our probe, we examined safety measures adopted by the building contractor, We also checked the contract agreement, recorded statements of witnesses and came to the conclusion that safety measures were not as per the prescribed standards."
After the investigation, the police took the call to register a complaint of causing death due to negligence against the building contractor. "The complaint has been registered under sections 304 (a) of the Indian Penal Code. The contractor will be arrested and a chargesheet will be filed against him at the earliest," the officer added.
