Nagpur: Traffic congestions are not new to Nagpur, especially with Metro Rail, cement roads and flyover works going on. Over the last three days though, the situation became especially bad as Kamptee road was shut down owing to repair work of underbridge. On Wednesday, the procession to mark Guru Nanak Jayanti further crippled the traffic entirely in south-west, west and North Nagpur.
Even though the traffic police had issued a notification for traffic diversion, their personnel failed to manage the movement properly. Road users passing through places like Kadbi Chowk, Samvidhan Chowk, LIC Square, Residency Road, CK Nayudu road, Akashwani Square, Variety Square, Rani Jhansi Square, Amravati Road, suffered a lot. All the roads were full of vehicles exposing poor management skills of traffic police.
TOI saw roads had remained blocked in the afternoon and traffic was passing through many inner lanes which were either encroached by roadside vendors or not sufficient to carry such huge traffic. Ambulances too were stuck in traffic jams.
The feedback from motorists was negative about traffic management. "Travelling from one place to another in Nagpur is a task these days. One, because of Metro Rail construction and second, because of cement road works. People travelling on Kamptee road suffered big chaos today due to work on railway bridge and Guru Nanak Jayanti procession," rued Anuja Sharma, a motorist.
"I remembered the dismantling of Chhatrapati Nagar flyover and how Metro officials had managed traffic meticulously. It was very well-informed in media and signboards with directions were put in inner lanes, there was no chaos. I think our police should also take such actions and learn from them so there should not be any problem," Sharma stated.
The diversions affected city bus operations too. "Many routes had to be cancelled and many buses reached late," said an officer from NMC's transport department.
Ramesh Nagrare pointed out that religious, cultural and organizational processions held frequently by members of various communities and groups in Nagpur had become a major cause for traffic jams lasting many hours. The police had to struggle considerably to resumption of traffic flow by late in the evening.
DCP (traffic) Ravindrasinh Pardeshi was not available for comments but a senior police official admitted there was disarray. He claimed that the traffic policemen tried their best to manage the traffic.
