AAP’s national meet today, to focus on rebuilding party

NEW DELHI: In a politically charged atmosphere, with UP civic polls and Gujarat assembly elections round the corner, Aam Aadmi Party will be holding its fifth annual National Council (NC) meeting in the capital on Thursday. The meet will bring together founding members, delegates and state in-charges from across the country to set the grounds for bolstering the "organisation".

The meeting will be significant in the backdrop of the internal turbulence in AAP witnessed earlier this year. Also, there is a suspended animation between chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Kumar Vishwas camps as to what would happen during the NC. A power play may be in the offing as Vishwas will also be part of the meeting as a member.

Kejriwal is expected to be the last of five key speakers. He is expected to touch upon the way forward for AAP, which is gearing up for contesting the UP civic polls and 11 assembly seats in Gujarat, for now.

The state of the Indian economy under the BJP-led NDA government and the impact of demonetisation and GST are also expected to the focus of speeches.

AAP's chief spokesperson in Delhi, MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj, said that each NC brings into focus the key concern affecting people at that point, this time being the economy. Interestingly, with Lok Sabha election slated in 2019, this NC is also seen by party insiders as a platform that will indicate AAP's plans towards organisation expansion and evolution in the next one year.

Deputy CM Manish Sisodia will be showcasing the performance of Delhi Government since it came to power in February 2015.

AAP Delhi convener Gopal Rai, who has been steering the organisation's revamp in Delhi after the municipal polls earlier this year, will speak about bolstering the organisation. Founding member and senior functionary Sanjay Singh will address issues surrounding the economic policies of the Centre. Ashutosh will touch up on the political agenda and the current political scenario.

Since Vishwas is in-charge of Rajasthan, he will also be asked to present the organisation's evolution and work in the state.

In another politically significant development, AAP's PAC on Sunday decided to reinstate Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan who was suspended from the party in May.He had accused Vishwas of trying to take over Kejriwal's role as convener by conniving with MLAs and also called him a "BJP-RSS agent."

While the AAP top brass has so far steered clear of making any comments on Khan's reinstatement or countering Vishwas, it is evident that this decision has stirred still waters and the impact may be evident in interactions at the NC.
