Mohanlal, Priyadarshan to reunite for period film based on Kunjali Marakkars of 16th century
Malayalam actor Mohanlal and Priyadarshan's next offering is based on Kunjali Marakkars. The director confirmed the news in an interview given to Times of India, saying that the duo were looking at a film with a huge budget and settled with a period drama based on Kunjali Marakkars.
The two had teamed up last year to deliver Oppam, the Malayalam crime thriller which was based on a story by Govind Vijayan. The duo will now be reuniting for this period film which has been in the pipeline for a long time now. "We wanted to do a big film together next. As a result, we have been working on Kunjali Marikkar for some time. The research for the film is ongoing and it would take at least 10 months for that to complete," the director tells Times of India.
Tackling a historical subject, the film will require nuanced research to present something that is not in the public knowledge already. The story behind Kunjali Marikkar is very intriguing. The title was given to the Muslim naval chief of the Zamorin (Samoothiri), Hindu king of Calicut, in present-day state of Kerala, in the 16th century.
There were just four titleholders in that era and it is still unclear which one Mohanlal will play.
