JAIPUR: The Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) employees who are infamous for coming late to office were found reporting on time on Wednesday, a day after city mayor Ashok Lahoti made singing national anthem and national song mandatory for all. On second day, the employees were seen sincerely singing the national anthem at 9.50 am and the national song at 5.55 pm at their seats and in the JMC corridors.
An official at the JMC said, "Out of 551 employees, 26 employees were late on Wednesday. Nearly, 95.3% employees hit the punctuality."
Elated with the support, mayor Lahoti said, "This is a positive sign that employees at JMC are inculcating good practices, including discipline and punctuality. This should not be taken as party politics. Our initiative is supported by more than 50 municipalities and municipal corporation across the country and soon many would be implementing it the same."
The city mayor was supported not only by his employees but many on the social media too justified his move and #standforanthem trended on Twitter for many hours on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. Moreover , along with BJP workers many organisations such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal reached JMC headquarters and garland the city mayor for the initiative. The headquarters was also echoed with Vante Matram slogans.
Chief minister Vasundhara Raje showed her support by retweeting mayor Lahoti's tweet on Tuesday.
At the same time, sources in CMO said, the chief minister summoned the mayor on Tuesday evening and pulled him for his 'go to Pakistan' statement.
Lahoti on Monday said, "We are not asking to raise any religious slogan. If someone wants to oppose the national anthem and the national song of the country where one resides, the person is free to do so. But the person should then go to Pakistan."
Many at the JMC believed the mayor was trying to hit two birds with a stone. Other than receiving appreciation from the senior BJP leaders for the initiative, he has tightened the noose on JMC employees who are infamous for coming late to the office. In a surprise inspection conducted by the mayor on March 13 this year, nearly 85% JMC officials were found absent from work. The inspection was carried out at 9.45 am.
