Pune: The city unit of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has approached the civic chief, seeking a crackdown on illegal hawkers and vendors.
In a letter submitted to municipal commissioner Kunal Kumar, the MNS claims the number of illegal hawkers in the city is significant, and many are non-Maharashtrians. It wants action to be taken against illegal hawkers in the next two days.
There have been gross malpractices in the anti-encroachment drives, said Ajay Shinde, who belongs to the city unit of MNS. He said though the civic administration had issued permits to some hawkers, the permit holders had, in turn, rented out their spots to illegal vendors. Also, the local civic officials have been ignoring the presence of hawkers in their areas and thereby are supporting illegal practices. The civic chief needs to look into the issue at the earliest, Shinde said. The illegal hawkers are a security risk and cause traffic jams by occupying roads, he said.
