On Tuesday, cracks were noticed on the portion of the Esa lake bund at Nandivaram-Guduvancheri where a breach occurred during the 2015 monsoon. In 2015, the bund gave way and water flowed into the canal of the lake, which joins the Adyar at at Oorapakkam.
In January 2016, the opening was plugged by PWD authorities using casuarina poles and sandbags, and loose sand was poured to fill the gap.
Loose sand was also deposited just before last year’s monsoon to strengthen the bund that is around 8 feet high.
During the last few days, the inflow into the 400-acre tank led to it getting half full.
The loose sand slowly began to give way, resulting in the cracks.
