Pune: A 70-year-old woman suffered grievous head and shoulder injuries when she was hit by a speeding scooter while she was crossing the road in front of Nyati Estate in Mohammadwadi around 8pm on Monday.
The unidentified scooterist rode away immediately leaving Joan Noronha, a home maker, to fend for herself.
A security guard from one of the nearby societies rushed to her aid and took her to a nearby hospital where she was treated and later shifted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Wanowrie.
The Kondhwa police have registered an FIR based on a complaint lodged by her husband Antony Noronha (72) from Accasia Apartment in Nyati Estate on Tuesday.
Noronha told TOI on Wednesday, "My wife finished the household chores and walked out of the society to buy fruits. She was crossing the road when the rider of a blue scooter hit her and sped away. Joan fell down and lost consciousness. A security guard took her to a hospital for preliminary treatment. We later shifted her to another hospital where she is recuperating. She is feeling better and will be shifted to a private room."
Kondhwa police's investigating officer Mohan Deshmukh said, "One of the CCTV cameras has captured the images of the scooter. We are working on clues to ascertain the registration number of the vehicle and identify the suspect so that he can be arrested."
The guard, Prabhu alias Shishuram Das, said, "I was posted at the main gate when I heard the cries of a woman fruit vendor. On rushing out, I found an old woman lying on road. I saw blood oozing from her head. I took help from a man and rushed her to hospital in an autorickshaw to stop the bleeding. She regained consciousness. I conveyed it to my superiors and they contacted her husband who reached there in some time."
Vegetable seller Suraj Karande said, "A scooter rider, who was in his 20s, came from Handewadi chowk at high speed. He lost control over the vehicle and hit the old lady. The man halted at the main gate, looked around to the woman for five seconds and sped away. She fell on the left side. The fruit vendor picked her up and took help from the guard to send her to a hospital."
Businessman Saifee Danawala said the narrow roads in Mohammadwadi have to be widened because it has become difficult for traffic and pedestrians to cross the road during peak hours.
"Minor accidents have become a regular feature here because there are potholes on the roads, some in a bad shape at some places after it was dug up by private firms for laying cables. Congestion can be eased if tempos parked along the roadsides are relocated and encroachments removed," he added.
