VARANASI: The four-day function of the 86th annual celebration of Mulagandha Kutey Vihara and 126th year of Maha Bodhi Society of India began with a series of Buddhist rituals on Wednesday at Sarnath, where Buddha preached his first sermons.
Entire Sarnath area has been decorated with flags and flowers. Buddhist devotees and monks from various Buddhist countries have arrived here to take part in the celebration. The festivity began with the worshipping of Lord Buddha in the morning.
Buddhist monks led by the head of Mulagandha Kutey Vihara and joint secretary of Maha Bodhi Society of India Bhante K Meghankar Thero offered prayer and and lit lamps at Dhammekh Stupa for world peace. Later, hundreds of monks with candle lamps circumambulated Mulagandha Kutey Vihara and offered prayer at Bodhi tree in the evening. The Buddhist monks recited 'Mahaparitran' path at night.
