Approaches complainant on Facebook with offer in Malaysia

Navi Mumbai: A 26-year-old hotel management graduate from Karanja in Uran has been cheated by a man from Telangana with the promise of a job in Malaysia.

Sumit Arun Ovhal had completed his course in 2012, and was working in Vile Parle. In 2016, he started looking for a job abroad. In June that year, he was approached by Athar Hussain on Facebook, and offered a job in Malaysia.

“The complainant showed interest and he sent his passport to the accused in Telangana to get him a visa. After a few days, the accused sent the passport saying he will have to get the visa himself as he is a resident of Mumbai,” said sub-inspector Deepak Kadbane from Mora police station.

Mr. Ovhal got a tourist visa, and informed Mr. Hussain, who asked him to deposit money towards the ticket and the job. By September 2016, he had deposited ₹1.85 lakh in two accounts.

Mr. Hussain then sent Mr. Ovhal a ticket to Kuala Lumpur, and he travelled on September 24. “After reaching there, he learnt that the accused had not arranged any job. He met an agent whom the accused had referred to. The agent gave him a place to stay and promised a job and work visa, and took his passport. In February 2017, Mr. Ovhal managed to come to India with the help of some Indian lawyers,” said Mr. Kadbane.

The complainant then met the accused in Telangana and demanded his money.

When he didn’t return the money even after several communications, Mr. Ovhal filed a complaint with the Mora coastal police on Monday. A case has been registered and a police team will soon be going to Telangana.
