Seven of their comrades were killed when Israel destroyed what they said was a tunnel being dug underneath the Gaza Strip border. It was operated by a group called Islamic Jihad. Five of their number were killed in the explosion. Hamas says two of their own fighters died when they tried to rescue survivors. The tunnel was razed on the Israeli side of the border. And Hamas claims it was an attempt by Tel Aviv to sabotage its latest bid to reconcile with its rival, the Palestinian Authority. Hamas ceded administration of Gaza to the authority last month in a new effort to form a unity government. Palestinian militants control many tunnels like this one, found by Israeli authorities last year. They've been used to stage attacks inside Israel. On Saturday (October 28) a United Nations aid agency said it found what appeared to be another one underneath one of its schools on the Strip. Israel has been trying to counter the tunnels by building a 36-mile underground barrier, costing over a billion dollars.
